The fact that you're here, reading this thread means that we already have something in common, a love of writing and roleplay.
So here we have a thread for us all to discuss what it is we love about RP, how we got here and all our own little RP quirks.
A few questions to get the discussion underway!
How long have you been RP'ing? What sparked your interest in it? Do you have a favourite genre or format for RP? Do you prefer group RP or 1x1s? Where do you get your character ideas from? Do you have pre-made characters you bring to RP settings or do you make a new character for each RP you take part in? How do you go about creating a character concept? Do you like a detailed character sheet or would you rather explore things like character background and personality through your IC posts? How did you wind up on this specific forum?
These questions and any more you can think of!

These questions and any more you can think of! I've been roleplaying for about.. 7 or 8 yrs. I really like sci-fi, modern, and fantasy roleplays. I aaaaalways make new chars. It's funn-er. I go through the name, age, and history first, then also try to build the char from there. I always love char dev. Aaaaand I ended up here through a dedicated member. And yes, mostly I like 1x1.

Do you like a detailed character sheet or would you rather explore things like character background and personality through your IC posts? How did you wind up on this specific forum? I've been RPing since I was a wee babby. I was nine when I started, in chat-rooms. Because if you didn't pretend you were a wolf in a chat channel, you've never been a real RPer. So that's been about 14 years. I made a friend there that I talked to until very recently, and she was lost to the sands of the internet. (That's a weird feeling, and I feel like we are the first generation to experience it really. Like making friends online, and then we just lose them, they disappear and we will never find them again. I hope they are okay though, sincerely. Sorry for the digression.) I just thought it was an interesting way to interact with others, like to express yourself through a character who has their own motivations and goals, but can be fueled by your desire and technique. I love working with a group and seeing things I'd never have thought of, and that's why I RP. It's also the only reliable way I can think of to make me write as well. Favorite genre? Hard to say. I make a lot of stuff set in universes that I totally obsess over, like Avatar: the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra. I like modern things usually, or science fiction. Crime related stuff too is usually fun. I like everything a lot. I prefer small group RPs. Big groups usually out pace me in my old age, so I use small groups to keep things tight and concise. That also means I often lose some of the motivation for things, which kind of sucks too. My character ideas are usually a sort of amalgamation between my character traits, and the ones I wish I had, or the flaws that I have and those that I'm grateful I don't. I use no pre-made characters. I always try to come up with something fresh for every game. In creating a character, I usually start with the basics, like physical appearance. Then I come up with a backstory, and make the personality suit that history in a rational way. I prefer detailed sheets, but as I get more familiar with people, I find IC can be good if a little inconsistent. I ended up on this forum, after we had to scuttle the USS RPGFO. But I'm happy to be here because it means that we have more control and power over the site's fate.

These questions and any more you can think of! I've been RPing now for... *has to think and do maths, one moment* 15 years or there abouts now... which, wow. Why do I feel old now? Ok, sorry, anyway, I've always loved writing, loved creating stories. But what really got me into RPing was a friend of mine in elementary school. My characters often just pop up in my head. Sometimes it's a backstory and a name, sometimes it's less than that. I tend to make a new character, though there are a couple that have had different incarnations, but very few. As stated before, I sometimes already have a name or backstory already thought up. Other times I think of something I want to play or something that a specific RP needs and build something from there until a character throws up their hand and wants to go for it. I tend to go with a medium-sized character sheet. A basic of personality and background with looks, abilities, occupation, that kinda thing. For the most part, though I do like exploring more through the IC posts and will often adjust a character sheet as I go. I came to RPGFO through Google after I got out of college because I missed roleplaying badly. I was on there for four years or more and it's become my second home. I tend to be much more active with 1x1's but that's not to say that I won't join group RP's. It really depends on the style of it and how things are set up. I have additional questions: When you roleplay or do any kind of writing, do you plan things for your character? Do you find that they really do have minds of their own? I'll be honest, my characters really do seem like separate people. I'll try to have a plan and then as I write, the character is like, "Nope! I don't think so!" and off I go onto something totally different! So what I've begun to do is just write the situation and see how my characters react to it. It's been a lot of fun that way and I get things I didn't consider beforehand because of it.

These questions and any more you can think of! I've been roleplaying since I was in the 9th grade so around six years unless you count those times on the playground that was filled with imagination and different characters. But I've always found myself writing stories as a kid. I've only been forum roleplaying since 2011. What sparked my interest for virtual roleplaying was this X-Men game on Byond that I knew nothing about. I was pretty nubish for a while until a friend taught me how to roleplay. I've been hooked on it ever since. I don't think I really have a favorite genre. I just do a lot of different things. I prefer group RP's since 1x1's tend to go by slow or usually dying soon. I get my character ideas from my brain mostly and other times I think back to a lot of shows, games, and comics that I've looked at. If anything I borrow powers from those, but the rest comes from me. I make a new character for each RP unless I'm on an off-forum game and I feel like reusing a character or if I didn't get to fully use a character before a roleplay died. I usually start with thinking of the name, age, and gender first and if it's not required immediately I work on the history through the IC. Sometimes things start with a picture and an idea just comes to me. I like both detailed and exploration through IC though I've found exploration through IC to be better in the sense that it can go any way you want it to without pre-made plans. I found my way here, because Deebz added me to the Facebook group.

For as long as I've been conscious of my own thought processes I've been a storyteller. Not a magnificent one, mind you, but one nevertheless. I would stay up nights with my grandma and by the time I was five we'd finished all the children's books on the shelf; so she would have me make up stories for her.
This casual storytelling evolved over time into playground games, which as I consider them a sort of RPing means I've been doing so since about third grade; while everyone else was pretending to be superheroes, or playing kickball, my friends and I were noble knights defending Gymnasia(The spider-web style jungle gym) from the evil Frost Lord(my best friend at the time, Allen Fries(it sounded like freeze... Hence Frost).
We were exorcists hunting down the malevolent spirit known as Redtooth(My friend Juan who wanted to be a vampire)
We were cowboys, samurai, and deep-sea treasure hunters and each day was a new adventure full of rich characters and daring heroism.
As I grew up and began to get a firmer mastery of language it was suggested that I should write down my ideas... And so I did. By the time I was ten I had begun hundreds of stories(though finished only a handful with my impatience to get the next one started always getting the better of me.)
Then my friend Justin showed me two sites in a singular weekend... The first; GaiaOnline.com The second; Chat.com
My life was never the same. On Gaia I made myths and monsters, and met some of my favorite people on Earth(You're the best, little bro <3, you know who you are)
On Chat.com my friend Justin and I would have fun pretending to be people we weren't and meeting interesting and oftentimes bizarre individuals.
My initial experiences were fairly terrible from a writer's perspective, but they were fun, and they got me hooked. Ever since I've wanted to expand on my ideas, to meet more people, to create more worlds, to fae daring challenges and explore lost civilizations(For all these reasons and more I prefer group RPs).
And so I have. Generally I keep to a set of given characters, a paired set of RP settings which my friends and I have dubbed TW, or Twin Worlds, and for those I keep to the same thirty or fourty characters for the most part.
Outside of them, however, I'm always testing new things, reinventing old ones, and collaborating on intruiging concepts. My characters in my main threads don't change, but they do //change// in that they learn, and grow, and evolve. In my off-threads I'm almost ever ready with a brand new ensemble of characters(I think I spent a week making upwards of fifty heroes and villains when the DCU RP started... still waiting to use most of them)
The process I use to make a character is ever-changing, but usually stems from expanding on a singular concept. A color, a flower, a sin or a virtue, a time of day, a type of music; whatever it may be I attempt to ponder what sort of emotions the given concept inspires in me, setting the character's mood and expanding outwards from there.
Anyway; I've been rambling lots... Fantasy RPs are best, both traditional and modern. Format doesn't matter really. Character sheet depends on the people; if I RP with people I haven't RPed with before I prefer character sheets, but if I know them and find them competent and fun less is more. I'm here after fleeing RPGFO during the end-times.

How long have you been RP'ing?I started when I was 11, so I would say ... about a decade? A pretty long time, at the least. What sparked your interest in it?My older sister introduced me to it. I've always been a bookworm, so she recommended joining with her in a small RP she was writing online with her friends. I wasn't very good, understandably, but none of us were. :p Do you have a favourite genre or format for RP?Fantasy of any type is my favorite (Science fiction, Modern Fantasy, Traditional Fantasy) because they're also my favorite types of stories to read. I also like romances, but I haven't seen many of those around. Format? Um. I like it when they have words and letters and things. Do you prefer group RP or 1x1s?I prefer groups since it gives a wider pool of creativity. I don't dislike 1v1's, but I find them harder to get into. Where do you get your character ideas from?Books, movies, people I see, people I know, vague ideas. I usually blend multiple categories in order to create a "unique" character, rather than making a carbon copy of someone. Do you have pre-made characters you bring to RP settings or do you make a new character for each RP you take part in?Generally I create a new character for any story I enter. On occasion, I have brought in other characters that have been made before, since the character scheme and idea fit with their role in the RP. When transferred over they may change a little to better fit their new role or to fix any flaws in character portrayal I noticed in their previous incarnation. How do you go about creating a character concept? To put it simply? Inspiration. I don't search for something to make a character from, I just make the "base" of the character (Gender, Name, Personality, Appearance) and then let my subconscious work on what the character will become. Do you like a detailed character sheet or would you rather explore things like character background and personality through your IC posts?I like detailed character sheet, more as a reference for myself than anything. If I don't write a character for a while I can become unfamiliar with the role and portray it in a way I did not originally intend to if I cannot refer to my original purpose. How did you wind up on this specific forum?I flew in with the horde. >

How long have you been RP'ing?
I started around 9 or 10 years old so, similar to bedlam, about a decade or so. Dear god, has it really been that long?
What sparked your interest in it?
Its funny. I'd always loved to read, but I never actually thought about writing. I used to be into this show called Code Lyoko, it was on Cartoon Network when I was a kid. But I loved it so much I went onto its website and into the forums. There I discovered that people like me were writing stories together and I thought that was awesome. For a while I just sifted around, reading people's stories until I finally worked up the courage to join one. And thank god I did.
Do you have a favourite genre or format for RP?
I generally prefer fantasy of any kind. I really like the medieval time periods, and things of that nature. But if the story is intriguing it doesn't quite matter what the genre is.
Do you prefer group RP or 1x1s?
Um, I like both. I don't think I have a preference. I like the control you can have in a one on one, or smaller RPs. But I also really enjoy interacting with multiple different characters. I guess it depends on the story for me.
Where do you get your character ideas from?
I generally just build them from scratch! They change with each story, for the most part.
Do you have pre-made characters you bring to RP settings or do you make a new character for each RP you take part in?
I normally have a certain "type" of character that I'll bring to a RP. But their backstory, what drives them, etc, that all changes depending on the narrative.
How do you go about creating a character concept?
Generally when I read a plot, I automatically will know where I want my character to fit in. Intuition, I guess? Idk...
Do you like a detailed character sheet or would you rather explore things like character background and personality through your IC posts?
I'm actually a big believer in not using CS's at all, or at least using a very basic one. I once joined a RP where the GM asked everyone to write a CS but not post it to the main OOC and instead PM it to her. This way, nobody knew about each other's characters in advance, so we had to discover who they were more naturally. It felt more realistic to me, more like I was reading a book.
How did you wind up on this specific forum?
From good ol' RPGFO thats how!
